Environmental Health Coalition Projects
Overview: Work with
Environmental Health Coalition (EHC) in the struggle
for environmental justice in San Diego’s older,
low-income, nonwhite communities. One particular action
that would be especially useful and timely is presented
below, and the second one will be determined in conjunction
with the most relevant issues facing the Environmental
Health Coalition in 2007/2008. An action alert system will
be set up between the EHC and the EarthSpirit Team to
allow church members to be informed about environmental
health issues and actions needing action.
- (Action 1) Provide support for EHC’s Lead
ordinance for San Diego. Action: Letters and/or testimony
at San Diego City Council in support of The Children’s
Right to Lead Safe Housing Ordinance. The proposed
law would apply to all pre-1978 housing, both owner-occupied
and rental. It would require owners to test for lead
hazards at the time the property is sold, and between
tenants in the case of rental housing. If lead hazards
are found, they must be remediated. Standards would
be established for work on lead-contaminated properties,
to protect workers and ensure that lead dust is not
spread further.
- (Action 2). To be determined in 2007/2008
Timeline:Set
up alert system between January and March 2007 and take
action when the ordinance comes before the City Council.
Decide 2nd action after first is complete
Target Audience: The
ordinance would benefit all residents of pre-1978 homes.
The advocacy action targets San Diego City Council.
Status Update: Ongoing
- (Action 1) Drafted letter of support for the lead
ordinance and developed a petition to get church members
and friends to sign, encouraging support of the ordinance.
Signatures have been gathered. Letters have been sent to the Mayor and City Council members. Now awaiting action
by City Council. PROGRESS BEING MADE.
- (Action 2) NO STEPS TAKEN. DELAY ACTION DETERMINATION
UNTIL FIRST ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE ACTION IS COMPLETE.
